Website SEO Audit Checklist for Small Businesses
A step-by-step audit you can run yourself in an afternoon: crawlability, indexing, canonical tags, titles, content, internal links, performance and the conversion path.
Most small business websites do not have a deep SEO problem — they have a handful of unattended basics that quietly hold the whole site back. This is the checklist we work through before writing a single word of content, in the order that matters. A page that search engines cannot reach cannot rank, no matter how good the copy is, so start at the top and do not skip ahead.
1. Can Google reach the page?
Open your domain's robots.txt and confirm nothing important is disallowed. Then confirm the sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console and that your key pages appear in it. Finally run a URL inspection on your homepage and one service page and read the index status literally — if it says a page is not indexed, nothing downstream matters yet.
- robots.txt allows the pages you want found
- XML sitemap exists, uses absolute URLs and is submitted
- No accidental noindex on a page you want to rank
- URL inspection reports the page as indexed, not excluded
2. Is the right version of the page indexed?
Every site exists in several versions — http and https, with and without www, with and without a trailing slash. Only one should be the answer. Check that the others redirect rather than load, that the canonical tag on each page points at itself, and that search results do not show two entries for the same page.
- http redirects to https, and one domain version wins
- Each page carries a self-referencing canonical
- No two URLs serve the same content
- Filter and sort parameters do not create indexable duplicates
3. Titles, descriptions and headings
Every indexable page needs a unique title that names the service and the place where it is true, plus a description that would make someone click. Skim your titles in Search Console's page report: if they all end with the same phrase and start with nothing distinct, you have a template problem rather than a content problem. Confirm each page has exactly one H1 that matches what the page is about.
- Unique, descriptive title per page — no repeats across the site
- Primary phrase near the start of the title where it reads naturally
- Meta description written for a person, not stuffed with keywords
- One H1 per page, with subheadings that follow logically
4. Content that matches the search
For each page, search the phrase you hope it ranks for and read the three results above you. If their pages answer a different question than yours does, the page needs a different angle, not more words. Thin pages that repeat the homepage are the most common finding: merge them rather than padding them.
- Each page answers one search intent, stated in the first screen
- One dedicated page per service you actually sell
- Thin or duplicated pages merged into the stronger URL
- Common buyer questions answered on the page itself
5. Internal links and anchors
Every page you care about should be reachable in two or three clicks from the homepage with a descriptive anchor. If your only route to a service page is a buried menu item, both visitors and Google treat it as less important than it is.
- Important pages linked from the homepage and from related articles
- Anchors describe the destination, not 'click here'
- No broken links on the pages that matter
6. Performance and mobile
Run PageSpeed Insights on the homepage and one service page on mobile, not just desktop. Look at the largest contentful paint and whether images are served at the size they display. Then load the site on a real phone and try the form with your thumb — that test catches problems no lab report will.
- Images resized and compressed, with dimensions declared
- No layout shift that moves the button you are reaching for
- Form fields, buttons and phone links usable one-handed
- Nothing hidden behind a hover state on touch screens
7. The conversion path
Rankings are only worth what the enquiries are worth, so finish the audit on the form. Submit it yourself and confirm the notification arrives, that the sender and reply-to address are right, and that a successful submission is recorded as a lead event in analytics. If you cannot see enquiries in your own reporting, you cannot judge any other SEO work.
- Test submission reaches the right inbox with reply-to set to the sender
- Confirmation message shown only after a real, successful send
- Click-to-call and WhatsApp links work on mobile
- A successful submission fires a tracked lead event
How to work through it
Take one section per sitting — twenty to thirty minutes each — and fix what you find before moving down the list, because the earlier items change what you will see later. Re-run the whole checklist every quarter, and after any redesign, platform move or domain change.
