SEO for Small Businesses: A Practical Guide
The six-step version of SEO that fits a small business: choose the right searches, build one page per service, fix the basics once, own local visibility, publish less and measure enquiries.
Small business SEO goes wrong when it borrows its plan from a large company: fifty blog posts, national keywords and no local footprint. A business with one office and a handful of services needs a much narrower plan, and it can be run in six steps.
Step 1: Start from the buyer's words
Write down ten to twenty searches a customer would actually type when they are ready to buy, including the locality they would add. Then search each one and note who ranks. You are looking for a small set of phrases where the intent is commercial and the competition is a business roughly your size, not a national directory.
- Commercial intent beats informational volume for a small budget
- Locality modifiers are where a small business can genuinely win
- Check the results page before committing to a target phrase
- Ten well-chosen phrases are enough to plan a year of work
Step 2: One page per service
A single services page covering six offerings ranks for none of them. Give each service its own page with a clear title, what is included, how it runs, who it suits and a next step. This is also where proof and a call to action belong — the page has to convert, not just attract.
- Distinct title and description per service page
- What is included, the process and a realistic timeline
- Who the service suits and who it does not
- A single obvious next step: call, WhatsApp or enquiry form
Step 3: Fix the technical basics once
Indexing, canonicals, redirects, speed and mobile usability are one-off tasks that make everything else work. They rarely need revisiting after they are correct. If your site is slow on mobile or the wrong domain version is indexed, fix that before writing content — otherwise you are publishing into a page Google cannot read properly.
Step 4: Own your local footprint
For a business serving one city, most of the win is local: a Google Business Profile that is complete and verified, consistent name, address and phone across directories, a steady flow of honest reviews, and pages for the areas you genuinely serve. Local visibility is often the difference between a website that exists and a website that phones ring.
- Google Business Profile with categories, services, hours and real photos
- Same name, address and phone number everywhere it appears
- Reviews requested from real customers and replied to
- Pages for the localities you actually serve, with real detail
Step 5: Publish fewer, better pages
One genuinely useful article a month that answers a real buyer question and links to the right service page does more than eight thin posts written to a word count. Write for the person comparing suppliers, keep the answer practical, and point each article at the page you want them to reach.
Step 6: Measure enquiries, not rankings
Track a successful form submission and a WhatsApp or call click as your lead events, then watch where those enquiries came from. Rankings are a leading indicator; enquiries are the result. A page at position six that produces three calls a month is a better outcome than position one on a search nobody buys from.
What to expect in the first six months
Technical fixes and on-page changes can show movement in a few weeks, especially on long-tail and local phrases. Competitive city-wide phrases usually take three to six months of consistent work. Anyone promising page one in three weeks is describing advertising, not SEO.
